It happened to me one New Year’s Eve. Luckily Baggins was wearing an up to date collar and only got to the next street when he was caught by a kindly neighbor. I got the call before I even realized he was missing!
Don’t let it happen to you. 1—If your dog likes a crate, consider crating your pet during the festivities. Although Dr. Jones says this won’t work for all dogs. If your dog is really scared, he could hurt himself trying to get out of the crate. This will work best if you’re nearby to let him out if necessary. 2—Distract your dog with a peanut butter stuffed kong or some other high value treat just before the fireworks start. This way, you pet may be so interested in something else that the fireworks don’t faze him. (You might combine this with the crate if your dog will go for it). 3—Bach Flower Essences—Rescue Remedy is my favorite way to reduce anxiety. Just squirt 3 or 4 squirts on his gums at the beginning of the evening and if you’re home with him, try a couple more just before the fireworks. You can pick up a bottle of Rescue Remedy at most pet stores and many higher end groceries (like Whole Foods). If you’d like more all natural solutions to doggie anxiety or what to do in case of an emergency, check out Dr. Andrew Jones ebook. It’s over 400 pages long and is stuffed with home remedies to heal your pet. Plus, he even shares some serious first aid remedies. You need to know this stuff! You’ll use it over and over again.
