Emily - Chihuahua, Beagle rescued from KY

by Lori Frantz
(Worthington, PA)

My story is quite long, but I will shorten it a bit. I found Emily a Chihuahua, Beagle mix 1 year old on PetFinder.

Went to Labtrobe, PA to pick her up.

Was told she was running scared in KY for over 3 weeks and kept coming to a guy's house that had 5 dogs. He fed her, but could not catch her.

After 3 weeks he set up a Hav-A-Hart trap and once he caught her, he took her to Moorehead, KY to the dog pound. I have never seen a dog so frightened in all my life. Anyway we started the 1.5 hr. trip home to my house from Latrobe. When stopping at a park & ride 10 miles from my house to drop my friend off, got Emily out to go potty and she was so frightened she backed out of her collar and was gone in the dark on a cold Feb. night. Took me 6 weeks to get her back. (I won't put you thru those long 6 weeks).

She did not make a sound in my house for a month and then she finally barked, it took 3 months of being in my house until I could touch her without her looking like I was hurting her and it took 5 months to get her to walk on a leash.

It took close to a year until she was actually comfortable in my house and I had a 14 year old Yorkie so it was not like there was not another dog around. She is still very frightened of strangers and does not take to men at all. She has turned out to be such a loving companion which I really needed when I had my 15 year old Yorkie Harley put down in March. I don't know how I would have gotten thru it without Emily. I love her so much and I am so glad I found the patience to wait for her to finally come around to me!
