Little Buddy

by Jane
(Audubon, PA)

Isn't he just the cutest little boy?

Isn't he just the cutest little boy?

One day when I was still teaching and it was snack time, I was looking on the Internet with a student for I can't even remember what.

Somehow we ended up on a site looking for dogs who needed to be adopted. It was then we saw Buddy, an adorable 3 year old Shih Tzu who just happened to be blind. When I saw that, I thought "I know just the mommy for him" (thinking of my partner, "Chickie".) Little Buddy was born blind to a breeder who was going to euthanize him.

Fortunately for all concerned, a family came along who initially saved him from this fate and adopted him. However, Buddy was now living with a woman in NH as his original adoptive parents had moved to FL and they were unable to take Buddy with them. We were heading up to Maine for the summer the next month and would be able to pick Buddy up on our way there. We completed the necessary paper work which included extensive background information on ourselves and our vets, both in PA and in Maine.

So, one month later, we stopped in NH to pick up Buddy. His caretaker gave us his crate, his bed and his "baby" (a little shaggy toy he loved dearly which we still have to this day). We were traveling in a van with our other pets, 2 dogs and 2 cats, so we placed Buddy in his crate in the back of the van on top of our other items. However, I had placed him backwards and when I realized this I said to "Chickie", "Do you think we should stop and turn him around so he can see where he's going". She replied, "Jane,he's blind". Already I had not remembered this about Buddy. We did turn him around though, knowing he'd probably feel more comfortable with his little body moving in a forward motion as we continued our journey to Maine. Our other two dogs, Mugsy and Big Buddy (also adopted, that's another story) are great travelers, but Little Buddy is still a very nervous traveler.

Most of the time you'd never know Little Buddy was blind at all. Having a blind pup presents even greater responsibilities as an owner, but he is such a love and we are so happy to have him as a part of our loving family.

Looking forward to reading other stories submitted by the members of our blog. Also, love this way of sharing so will have to check out further about Site Build It!

Thanks for this opportunity to share.
