Low Protein Dog Treat Recipe

Why A Low Protein Dog Treat Recipe?

I'm not a vet but my research and readers tell me dogs with kidney failure respond better to low protein diets.

Why? The kidneys don't have to work as hard to process the food.

Talk with your vet to determine a special diet for a pet with kidney failure.

Ingredients:

  • 2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup oatmeal
  • 1/2 tsp. garlic powder (optional)
  • 1/2 cup low sodium, low fat veggie broth
  • 1/2 cup cold water
  • 1 cup cooked vegetable (sweet potatoes, pumpkin, zucchini or winter squash—cooked and smashed or pureed)
  • Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Combine flour and garlic powder. Mix in veggie broth and vegetable(s). Add enough cold water to form a ball. Roll out dough to 1/2" and using a cookie cutter, cut into shapes (your choice—I like to use one shaped like a bone or a heart). Place on a non-stick cookie sheet & bake for 25 minutes. Let cool.

Since there are no preservatives, I recommend storing all homemade dog treats in the refrigerator.
