New Dog Sammy!
Ok, since I lost Baggins last Feb., many of you have written to ask if I'd been adopted by a new dog.
I want to introduce you to my new dog Sammy!
As I write this, I've only met him through pictures myself. So, I'm excited but a little nervous.
My friend and dog trainer Kirsten Frisch of www.gentlecanine.com found him at the town dump.
Kirsten spoke with the attendant and learned that he hung out with her all day but went “home” in the evenings.
Since he wasn’t allowed inside and there was no fenced yard, “home” seems to be where he was fed but that was about it.
Kirsten did some investigation and got a vague story from his “owner” who agreed to let Kirsten have him. She even gave Kirsten a kennel.
Eaten up with fleas, Sammy was scratching miserably and had lost a patch of fur on his back.
Kirsten made arrangements to take Sammy immediately to her vet where he was given Comfortis (a flea pill that kills all the fleas within 2 hours), a distemper shot, a rabies shot, a heartworm test (Negative - YAY!), and an overall check up.
The vet gave him a steroid shot and sent Sammy home with antibiotics to help with his miserable skin infection from the fleas.
Then, Kirsten took him home and gave him a flea bath and set him up in her garage for the next 36 hours (she couldn't risk bringing fleas into the house with her 3 huskies...that would have been a disaster).
A couple of days later, she found worms in his stool so it was back to the vet for some Drontal (expensive little pills $45 for 1 and a half pills - but they work!)
Aside from the parasite induced health issues, Kirsten reports Sammy settling in with her dogs just fine.
After those first stressful days he has decided he likes to curl up on a sleeping bag on the couch.
Apparently, the little guy needed some good rest after his past few months on the street (I can't believe he didn't get hit by a car.)
What kind is he? Well, he's obviously a mix but we think Australian Cattle Dog is in there. The vet thinks he's between 1 & 2 years old.
He sure does have a happy puppy look about his face doesn't he?
Now, that you've heard about my new dog Sammy, I know many of you have rescued lots of animals of the years.
Tell me about them in the form below. Maybe your story will inspire someone else to take in a rescue. :)
